Since HYT returns under the direction of Davide Cerato and kicks off with the Hastroid Green Nebula in early 2022, the highly original meca-fluidic watchmaking concept is in full swing. In addition to the first Hastroid series with the iconic bellows actuation and liquid hour display, HYT also introduces the Moon Runner series. This marks the first watch with an extra complication to go with the hour indication. Borrowing the aesthetics of the Supernova Blue Moon Runner launched a few months ago, the HYT now comes in blue with Hastroid Supernova Blue.
When HYT first broke the cover in 2012, it was blown away by the liquid chronograph display. The use of liquids to show time in a mechanical movement is puzzling, especially considering that any form of moisture is the natural enemy of the movement. Nonetheless, HYT has managed to create an extremely complex and original way of timing, using a system of bellows and liquid-filled capillaries as indicators. The Hastroid Supernova Blue is the next chapter in this iconic series that inherits the aesthetic set by the Supernova Blue Moon Runner. Its case is rather large, measuring 48mm wide, 52.30mm long and 17.20mm high, and is made of anthracite-coated titanium and carbon. The case, consisting of no less than 64 components, is a complex structure in itself. The domed sapphire crystal on the top and another sapphire crystal in the caseback reveal what's going on inside the Hastroid. The side panels of the case are also painted black on a blue background. The winding and setting crown is off-centre, between 2 and 3 o'clock, flanked by a pair of guards.
Any HYT in terms of its display is really something else. Hastroid Supernova Blue features an iconic round capillary that allows two immiscible liquids (one blue, one clear) to be used within hours. The interval between the two marks the exact time when the bellows is pumping liquid. Black grid around capillaries with glowing 3D hour indices. The large central hand is used for the minutes, and the small seconds subdial is located between 9 and 10 o'clock. The last indication is the power reserve, opposite the small seconds. Like previous Hastroid models, this Supernova Blue version is equipped with a proprietary movement, the HYT 501-CM, developed by Eric Coudray. This modular movement is hand-wound and has a power reserve of up to 72 hours. 352 parts are used throughout the movement, the vast majority of which are painted black to complement the look. It runs at 28,800vph and uses 41 gems. The two modules are connected by a lever and a curved feeler spindle (called a sensor), which converts the circular motion of the movement's running gears into a linear motion that inflates and deflates the bellows.
The HYT Hastroid Supernova Blue features a two-tone black rubber and blue Alcantara mixed strap. The Alcantara top is embossed with a block pattern to give it more life.
